We welcomed Hilary from Inn From The Cold in our classroom for Awakening Passions.
“We offer shelter, sanctuary and healing to assist homeless children and their families achieve independence.” ~ Inn From The Cold
The story of how Inn From The Cold started was very interesting to us. It was founded in 1998 when a group of concerned Calgarians noticed that there was a family in their neighbourhood that appeared to be homeless. The group contacted the pastor of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church who opened their doors to the family and provided a safe, warm place. Inn from the Cold has now operated for over 20 years helping children and their families with no place to go.
Inn from the Cold offers food and a place to stay for those who need it. They have a very big house with lots of rooms and a kitchen. Over 125 people stay every night and many of those people are kids.
We wanted to know how kids can help Inn from the Cold. Hilary explained that there are different ways that kids can help, from making cards for the volunteers, making financial and other kinds of donations. Kids can also volunteer to serve food with their families. Hilary told us the story of Dexter who is 8 years old and decided that at his birthday party he would donate his birthday money to Inn from the Cold so that they could provide Christmas dinner. That money fed over 100 people!
Many volunteers help out at Inn from the Cold every day making meals, doing special activities and helping to clean.
We would like to thank Hilary for coming out to help us learn about Inn From the Cold.
