For our second exploration we welcomed April Coté from the Make-A-Wish Foundation® Southern Alberta.
From the beginning of the presentation, the students were engaged in what this organization is all about. April had the kids predicting what a mission and a vision might be and the kids had some pretty accurate guesses!
Their Mission? Our mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta grants wishes in Southern Alberta and is one of eight chapters nation-wide in addition to our national office. Wishes granted in Canada are over 6,000 to date and we have granted over 400 in Southern Alberta. The money raised here in Southern Alberta stays in the region and helps us to grant wishes to local children.
We learned that there are 4 different kinds of wished that are granted:
We were treated to the video below about Connolly whose wish was granted earlier this year.
The questions the kids thought of were very interesting and some of their comments profound. We asked how can kids help and we were told about the connection between Ronald McDonald House Charities® Southern Alberta with the Hair Massacure fundraiser.
When it was asked if kids could help with Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta, the answer was, “Yes!”
We are hoping to take a trip to Cross Iron Mills Mall to help with their gift wrapping efforts over the Christmas season.
Our action this week, for the Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta, was to make care packages for the kids. We included items such as a pencil, eraser, post-its, notebooks, hockey cards and a little Christmas treat. The kids were so excited to put these bags together. They are learning that small acts can make a difference!
Thank you to April for the time she took to answer every question and engage the kids. It was a great day!
