Wow! What a great first Exploration we had!
The students of 3Ch hosted Sarah and Morgan from Ronald McDonald House Charities® Southern Alberta today and what we learned was amazing!
We began our journey of learning by watching a PowerPoint slideshow. The facts about Ronald McDonald House had the students engaged from the very first one! We learned how many Houses there are around the world, in Canada and in Alberta.
The students were thoughtful when they learned that there are 23 rooms in Ronald McDonald House in Calgary. This triggered questions about what happens when the house is full and how long families stay. We found out that one family stayed for 621 nights! We also learned that the cost for a family staying at the House is $12/night, which saves a family a lot of money at a time when life is already very hard. We did some math to figure out about how much the family saved; over $105,570!
The House “offers a home away from home for out-of-town families with children receiving medical treatment at a Calgary hospital. Our House provides a warm, compassionate and comfortable environment where families can share experiences, eat a warm homemade meal, and rest while caring for a sick child.”
Learning about the programs that RMH offers families while they stay there, had the students’ minds working. They asked questions about why cookies are given even though they aren’t healthy with a response that the kids at the House have treats too! Who doesn’t deserve a treat? They wanted to know what happens if a child has their birthday while they are staying at the house. The Magic Room had them intrigued!
One student asked what it was like at the house which prompted the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI7ubgoxas8&t=2s
“The House also features a communal kitchen, home-style living rooms, free laundry facilities, play areas and programming for all ages facilitated by our Family Services team. The House also operates two Care Mobiles – The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a state-of-the-art vehicle that delivers free and cost-effective medical, dental and health education services directly to underserved families in east Calgary.”
We were introduced to the many ways that kids can help out the House! The new program, Make Fun Matter which encourages people of all ages to raise money to help families staying at RMH had the students intrigued.

“In 2015, 308 families stayed at the House. While every effort is made to keep the cost of maintaining and operating the House to a minimum, it will take approximately $3.1 million to operate the House each year. The House relies on support from our friends in the corporate community and individual contributors.”
Ronald McDonald House makes a huge difference for the families who need to stay there. So it is important for others to make a difference for the organization. Visit the Make Fun Matter website to learn more about this program and how it works. https://www.rmhccanada.ca/.
Students were inspired by the efforts of people all over Canada to help other kids. Hearing their comments about how they wanted to help others was a highlight of the day. Our first way of taking action is making cards for the families at Ronald McDonald House in Calgary. It’s a small start to what will hopefully inspire some of our students into doing something more.
