March 30- April 3 Learning Plan for Grade 2

March 30th, 2020 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Hello Grade 2 Parents & Students,

Welcome to our first week of at home learning. The full learning plan for Week 1 can be found in your email or you can download it below. There are four main assignments for the Grade 2’s this week. It is the Grade 2 teams hope that the four tasks will take no longer than five hours. We have estimated how long each will take and made recommendations on how to spread the work out over the week. Whatever works best for you and your family takes priority however. I have also included our weekly spelling list for this week under the tab “weekly spelling”.

1. Gratitude Acrostic Poem (1 hour)

  • Students are asked to complete an acrostic poem on the theme of gratitude. When finished writing, students may add colour and decorate their poems. Upon completion of their acrostic poems, please save the student’s work for sharing at a later date. Students will also be asked to share their acrostic poems with their family.
  • You can print the template below or use any blank paper that you have at home.

  • Here are some examples of Acrostic Poems.

2. Letter to Teacher (1.5 hour)

  • Students are asked to write a letter to their teacher on what they have been doing since school has closed. They will be also asked to include a drawing illustrating one of the activities that they have written about. Upon completion of their letters, students are asked to upload a photo of their work into MyBlueprint. If families are having any difficulties with MyBlueprint it can also be sent as an email attachment.
  • Students can complete their work on a piece of paper or in a notebook.

3. Nonstandard Measurements at Home (1 hour)

  • Students are asked to find objects at home and measure the objects using a nonstandard unit such as paper clips, markers, shoes, etc. Students are to complete the Nonstandard Units of Measurement Worksheet. Upon completion of their Nonstandard Units of Measurement Worksheet, please save the student’s work for sharing at a later date.
  • Students can print the Units of Measurement Worksheet below or use any blank pieces of paper found at home.

4. Estimating Marbles (1.5 hour – 3 x 30 minute sessions recommended)

  • Students are asked to practice estimating how many marbles are in a jar by playing the ABCya ‘Marble Estimating Game’. Students can create their own jar of objects for estimation and have their families estimate how many objects are in their jars. Upon completion of their jars, please take a photo and save it for sharing at a later date.

Video Chat Sign-up Information

March 28th, 2020 · No Comments · Parent Communication

Hello 2/3S Parents & Students,

I am so excited to reconnect with students this week. I have missed seeing their faces so much. I hope that you are able to schedule a time for your child to Zoom with myself and a few peers. I really feel this time will be so good for the kids and myself. It’s been a long two weeks. I am so excited to see them again!

As per the email you have received about the learning plan, I would like to set up a video chat with some of the kids to say hello at various times during the week. This will give them the chance not only to talk with me, but also to see some of their classmates which is so important to them.

Step 1: Go to this website, and choose a time slot that works for you. Please sign your child up for one time-slot each week so that all the kids can have a turn. We will start off by signing up weekly and see how it goes. Please click on the link below to sign-up:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805044FA5AB23A3FD0-video

It will be challenging to have the whole class signed in at the same time, so I have created a sign-up form so up to 5 kids can “zoom in” at a time, for now.

If you need help signing up for a slot, please scroll to the bottom of this blog post for pictures and instructions

Step 2: Get the “zoom” app/program for your laptop, tablet or phone BEFORE your time. Create an account following the prompts:
https://zoom.us/download

Step 3: On your selected date and time, return to the blog and go to the “zoom info” page (located at the top of the website).

Follow the link there to enter the “meeting”.

Tips for using zoom:
-when asked if you want to join using audio: choose yes

-when asked if you want to join using video: choose yes

-if possible, have a parent or sibling close by for the first time, in case there are any technology issues your child needs help with

How to Sign up for a time slot on Sign Up Genius:

  1. After following the link, click “sign up” next to your chosen time slot
(if there is a number displayed, it means there are spots left. In this photo, it shows that there are 4 spots open for every time spot)
  2. Click “submit and sign up.” (picture below)

  1. Enter your child’s name
  2. Click Sign Up Now (picture below)

Grade 2/3S Learning Plan

March 26th, 2020 · No Comments · Parent Communication

Please note: the message below was also sent out to you in an email. It is being posted here as well to ensure everyone receives it and for easy access in the future. Thank you.

Dear Grade 2 & 3 Families,

Thank you for your patience as we have worked through some necessary planning in preparation for resuming structured learning opportunities for your child. I understand there has been plenty of uncertainty about what learning is going to look like moving forward. I can assure you that we are going to work on key learning outcomes at-home within the parameters established by the province and Rocky View Schools. We will be focusing on literacy and numeracy and you can expect that I will be providing an average of five (5) hours of work per week to your child.

Most of you have communicated the materials and technology you have available at home, which will help guide future planning.

Starting Monday, March 30, 2020, you will receive a weekly learning plan from me via our classroom blog. Each week, the plan will include:

  • what students will be working on for the week
  • an explanation of the activities or tasks I would like your child to work on
  • an explanation of how each student will be asked to demonstrate their learning
(for example, some tasks will be for practice, while other tasks will need to be posted on My Blueprint for assessment purposes)
  • the various resources that may be needed

Feedback for assessments will continue to be posted in PowerSchool.

I will primarily be communicating with you (parents) via the blog and email, and with your child through My Blueprint to start. Eventually working towards using Zoom to conference in small groups.

To help me understand how your child is doing on the tasks, I will be asking that they take a picture of their work and post it to My Blueprint. On the weekly learning plan, I will communicate which tasks need to be posted.

Students and/or parents can reach out to me for help or for clarification via e-mail. I will do my best to reply to emails as soon as possible within 24 hours. However, I have also set aside some specific times per week dedicated to more prompt responses for emails and student check-ins. In a few weeks, once we are all set up with Zoom this will be a way for me to conference with students in small groups.

Prompt Email Response Window of Time:
Monday 9am-12pm
Tuesday 1-3pm
Wednesday
  10am-1pm
Thursday 10am-1pm

Student Zoom (sign up for a slot starting next week)
Tuesday 9:30am-11:30am
Friday 11am-12pm

Information on how to set up Zoom will come very soon.

While this is new for all of us, I know we will get through it together! I want to assure you that I am here to support your child and their learning. I am looking forward to reconnecting with your child next week. Be sure to check the blog on Monday for the first week’s learning plan.

Talk to you soon!

Reminders for March 23, 2020

March 23rd, 2020 · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

Hello Parents & Students of 2/3S,

I hope everyone is keeping well. It is a new week and I am hoping to start setting up some routine academic activities for your child to do for one hour each day. These are some of the daily recommended activities for your child:

1) Home Reading– 20 minutes each day (picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, magazines, comic books or poetry books). Another option is the Raz-Kids Website we use at school. The password is on the yellow sheet that was included with your child’s belongings.

2) Spelling List #23– The students have their spelling books with them. They can write the words down that have been updated to our class blog under “Weekly Spelling” and practice them. Then on Friday you can test them on these 10 words. If they spend 10 minutes each day talking about what the words mean and then putting these words into sentences to help show their understanding of the weekly words.

3) Math Practice– The Grade 2 students are encouraged to continue practicing their math facts for addition and subtraction up to 20. The skills they are currently working on is adding 2-digit numbers (with regrouping) and subtracting 2-digit numbers with subtraction (borrowing). The next unit in math is measurement. **The Grade 2 students can work on courses on Mathletics, and I have set up some challenges for them this week on Sumdog (Math Website).**

The Grade 3 students are encouraged to continue practicing their math facts for multiplication up to the 5 times tables. The skill they are currently working on is adding 3-digit numbers (with regrouping) and subtracting 3-digit numbers with subtraction (borrowing). The next unit in math is measurement.**The Grade 3 students can work on courses on Mathletics, and I have set up some challenges for them this week on Sumdog (Math Website).**

4) Writing– Today students can write 2 things they are most grateful for. Please have them add details that explain why they feel they are grateful for these things.

I am missing all of my students very much!

Stay safe and healthy everyone 🙂

Letter to Parents & Students of 2/3S

March 16th, 2020 · 4 Comments · Uncategorized

Hello Parents,

I hope you all are doing well during these uncertain times. The teachers have met today and are now working on a plan for the upcoming weeks. We are now waiting on more direction from RVS.

In the meantime, we hope you all are taking care of your own and your family’s mental health. During this time, try to take a break and connect with your child, listen to their worries and concerns, play some board games, watch movies, do some art, bake together and spend some time playing outside. I would encourage your child to continue reading books on Raz-Kids and be sure to have discussions daily about what you all are most grateful for.

In the coming days as we learn more, we will do our best to keep you informed. You are all in my thoughts and please hug your child tight for me.

Stay healthy and warm regards,

Mrs. Speers

Reminders for Friday, March 13, 2020

March 12th, 2020 · No Comments · Uncategorized

  1. Home Reading (20 minutes)
  2. Keep practicing your basic math facts at home (adding, subtracting & multiplication 0-4).
  1. Both Rocky View School Division and Alberta Ballet have postponed our field trip to “Peter Pan” until further notice. For the time being, we will hold onto your $6 payment and try to re-schedule the field trip for a later date, if possible. If not, we will try to book a different field trip later in the school year. If none of these work out, then we will just refund your payment. Fingers crossed……things will improve sooner than later!
  2. Just a reminder,  Monday March 16th is a PL Day ~ No school for students.
  3. If possible, please remind your child to wear something green for St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday.
  4. Today we had a discussion around the topic of handwashing and keeping our classroom area clean. I am sure most of you have chatted with your children about washing hands well throughout the day. Please keep having these discussions. Here is a kid-friendly video that you can also access if you like: https://www.brainpop.com/health/diseasesinjuriesandconditions/coronavirus/As a precaution, the school has shut off all water fountains. We are encouraging students to bring one or two water bottles to school with them. If needed, students can fill up their water bottles using the taps in our classroom. The water bottle will be sent home with your child at the end of the day. You should be receiving more information from RVS today.

Grade 2

We have been practicing 2-digit addition and subtraction. Ask your child to explain when they need to regroup when they are adding or subtracting.

Please discuss important services in our community with your child at home. This is our focus in inquiry right now. Thanks in advance.

Grade 3

We have been practicing 3-digit addition and subtraction. Ask your child to explain when they need to regroup when they are adding or subtracting.

Your child has been asked to take a look at where goods in your house are from. They are looking for the words “Made in…”, “Product of…”, “Manufactured in…” on a variety of things in your house. We discussed looking at food items in the pantry or fridge, toys, electronics, clothes. They don’t have to write them down; just have a general idea of where things are from. Please help them with this. Thank you so much :-).

Stay warm and have a nice weekend!
