This week has been busy as Grade 5 students have been brainstorming potential Central Ideas (CI) of our Exhibition Unit of Inquiry, under the Theme: Who We Are. The last few years we’ve asked our Grade 5 students to create the CI to encourage their student voice and ownership of the process in Exhibition.
We began by learning about the elements to consider when creating a CI. After viewing several different examples of CI’s, students discussed the important concepts that are evident in each CI.
From here, students were in small groups and began creating concept maps under the theme of Who We Are. They were asked to identify important conceptual elements from this theme and once they had several concepts identified, they used those to help create their first drafts of their CIs.
The gift of time was evident as students were able to discuss and share their thoughts, receive support from various teachers that were circulating in their learning space and they eventually chose ONE CI that they would put forth to the rest of the grade 5 students to gather feedback and edits.
After a quick body and wellness break, the students put on their constructive feedback hats. Using sticky notes, they circulated to all of the newly created CI’s and gave their constructive critiques and feedback on the statements in order for groups to improve upon their CI’s in their second iteration.
After the group received some critical feedback, they evaluated and discussed common themes and what pieces of advice they would adhere to. They took suggestions from their peers and made any appropriate edits. This second iteration of their CI’s were shared with their own class the following day. As a larger group, they discussed the pros and cons of each CI and eventually voted for the top pick from their class to enter into the final vote for all of grade 5. The 3 final Central Ideas will be voted on tomorrow to determine what the Central Idea will be at the PYP Exhibition (#pwex18). Stay tuned to find out what the Central Idea will be for our Exhibition journey.
dear grade 5 students
I am a grade 5 students and I am writing to tell you hope you have a good year and exhibition is a hard job but don’t get mad or talk to other groups it just make your run out of time which is never a good thing.
My first suggestion is make sure that when you are doing it to the parents to not make a mistake. The reason I chose this was because parents know lots.
I hope this helps you in exhibition because that is a important project.
Dear future Grade 5 students,
Hi my name is Averie. In Exhibition our central idea was Actions, relationships and mindsets shape the global community. My topic was Drug use affecting health. I choose that topic because I was interested in learning about the good drugs and not just the bad. In this letter I will be giving you advice when you do Exhibition.
My first piece of advice is cooperate with your partner(s). I chose this because me and my partners didn’t get along. So we were spending most of our time arguing and not getting our work done.
My second piece of advice is use your time wisely and focus on your work. I choose this because most people including me and my group we didn’t use our time wisely so we didn’t get much done. I say this because I don’t want you to do the same thing.
My third piece of advice is once you get information write it right away and site you source. I choose this because you might lose your information and source like my group did a few times. So write your information right away.
I hope this letter helps you during Exhibition in working with your partner(s), using your time wisely and not forgetting your information/sources.
Dear future grade five students I hope you all have a good time trying to finish exhibition and I hope you all do well have fun.
I am a grade five student and I am writing to you to tell you that exhibition is a time that takes to months and there are also reasreach practicing like a hundred times. You also need to cooperate with other groups or if your by yourself everything depends on you.
My first suggestion is that you should choose a topic you are interested in not one your friend is doing. Remember that you can’t quit because this is a big part of your grade so I wouldn’t try to ruin it p.
The reason I choose is topic because I got bullied a couple of years ago. I hope this letter gives you a chance to think about your topic. I also choose this topic to see why did I get bullied I think I know the answer now it because they had a problem with there relationships.
The best of wishes I hope you all do well in exhibition it’s half of your grade so try your best make me proud.
from Ismail Rafih bye.
Dear grade 5 student
I am a grade 5 student and i am writing to you to tell you the exhibition is not as hard as you think .and you just need to think positive and not negative .and you have to be willing to put in a lot of time.
My first suggestion is not to waste time flys and don’t fight with you partner. Because you just waste more time doing it. The time you have is 9 week and you think that 2 months is a lot but is reality it goes so fast. The reason I said that is in exhibition I wasted a lot of time and me and my group fight a lot.
And my second suggestion is pick a topic you like and not something that you are going to get bored at because i got bored of my topic and that is the worst so pick something you put love.
My third suggestion is don’t take it as a joke because it’s not and my group thought it was a joke and that put us behind and a setback in exhibition.
I hope this letter helps you so you don’t make the same mistake I did.
Best of wishes
Dear Future Grade 5 student,
I am a grade five student and I am writing to you to tell you about exhibition. Last years central idea was actions, relationships and mindsets shape of the global community.
My first suggestion is your research can be hard because you have to do a lot more In grade 5 you write a lot more you use the iPads a lot more you have to do a lot of partner working and you have to do lots of presentation. The reason I chose this suggestion is because research can be hard and I want to prepare you for it.
My second suggestion is to try to co-operate with your group members because if you argue with them you will have more problems and struggles. I chose this this because I arugged with my group members and that lead to no work.
My third suggestion is that you shouldn’t fool around becuase you will also have to sit in the Hall and you will get yelled at. I chose this because this happened to me several times and it’s not fun you get yelled at.
I hope this letter helps you with exhibition.
Your hero, Denny
Dear future grade 5 student,
I’m a grade five student and I am writing to you to tell you adout the big project that your going. To do soon in grade my topic was addressing the needs of the homeless why I chose my topic. Is I wanted to learn more adout it and how I can help the homeless too.
1 My first suggestion is to not detract other groups because than your wasting your time and others an example is if you’re. Painting with your hands and you. Get a high five they have to waste there time to wash there hands.
2 My second suggestion is to not goof around and to stay on task and stay focused because time flies. Don’t waste it for me we had 9 weeks and it was fast. And listen to you teacher because you will regretting it because they say pretty important stuff. The reason is why I told you this is it will help you out.
3 My third suggestion is to get things done quickly because you don’t want to de behind. It is very stressful and harb to get things done the reason why I. Chose this is that it’s really good advice and I hope it will help you with your Ex too.
i hope this letter helps you and hopefully you’ll take my advice stay. On task and stay focused listen to your teacher get stuff done quickly. Thanks for reading my letter hope you bo well.
Dear Future Grade 5’s,
Hi, my name is Erin. I am writing this letter to tell you about exhibition. Last year’s central idea was Actions, Relationships and Mindsets Shape the Global Community. From that, my topic was Peer Pressure, I worked with Denny and Pria. I decided to choose that topic because I feel like peer pressure can happen so easily, even without you knowing you are doing it, so I wanted to bring awareness to others of what it is so they don’t pressure others.
My first suggestion I have for you is to pick a topic you are interested in. I say this because exhibition is nine weeks long and if you aren’t interested or passionate about your topic you will be very bored. If you are bored them your boredom will make your group members bored too, when all your group members are bored you will get nothing done for your work. I did pick a topic that I was interested in, but by the end of exhibition I was getting bored with it because I don’t think it was broad enough and we forgot about all the ideas we made at the beginning – Please don’t do that!
A second suggestion I have is to divide the work evenly so that everyone get a fair share. You can do that by telling your group member what to do, make sure that you still tell them what to do but without being bossy or mean, if you don’t you will turn into Mrs. Bossy Pants like I did. During exhibition I learned that the best way to get things done is to divide and conquer because then everyone will be working instead of only a few people. One way to divide the work is saying one person will research this question, this person will do this one, and so on.
My third suggestion is don’t waste your time. I am saying this because even though exhibition is nine weeks long – which seems like a lot but it’s not, it will go by very fast. My group can relate to not using our time because at the very beginning of exhibition when we make our central idea, subtopics and questions we were really focused and had so many great ideas but then in the middle we fell apart. All the great ideas basically went in the trash. Our exhibition wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t fabulous like we planned for. So what I’m saying is, if you want a fabulous exhibition – which who doesn’t! Then please don’t waste your time.
Hopefully this letter helped you to learn that you should pick your own topic, don’t be bossy and keep a hold of your time management. I hope you have fun in exhibition!
Dear Future Grade 5 students…
I am a grade five student and I am writing to you to give you tips on grade 5 exhibition. I hope that you listen to my tips and take them seriously.
The topic that I had chosen was gender equality. I chose this topic because I wanted people to be aware of how important it is to make sure that both genders are equal.
My first suggestion is to chose a topic that YOU want to do. If you chose a topic that your friends want to do, you may not enjoy the next 9 weeks or it might make your friendship a lot harder to deal with. Also, it might make you get off task easily because you might be tempted to talk or fool around.
Secondly, you need to watch your time! Everyone will tell you that time flies fast, but at the moment, you may not listen. I am telling you that most days feel long, but in the end, you think that you should use your time time wiser. For me, I can see the how the time should be wiser. You should too.
Pay attention to your group and only your group! At first, my group and I started talking and paying more attention to what was happening with other groups rather than ours. Then, around the middle of exhibition, we realized that we didn’t have anytime to fool around and that we needed to start focusing. I hope that you don’t make the same mistake as me and my group did.
I hope that this letter will help you for the time period of exhibition.
