This week has been busy as Grade 5 students have been brainstorming potential ideas for the Central Idea (CI) for our Exhibition Unit of Inquiry, under the Theme: Who We Are.
Monday saw the Grade 5’s getting together to learn about the elements to consider when creating a CI.
From here, in small groups, the students began creating concept maps to identify important conceptual elements to consider under the theme of Who We Are. Once they had a variety of concepts addressed, they used those to begin creating their first drafts of CI’s.
After discussing and sharing thoughts, each group came to a consensus on the ONE CI they would put forth to the grade 5 group to receive edits and feedback.
Today saw the 5’s put on their editor hats. They toured all of the CI’s constructed by different groups and with sticky notes, gave their constructive critiques and feedback on the statements in order for groups to improve upon their CI’s for their second iteration.
Once groups had received their feedback, they took some time to discuss commonalities and valuable pieces of advice which they would take into consideration when revising their CI’s
After brainstorming revisions to their CI’s, groups then shared their second iteration of their revised CI’s with their own class. They again spent time analyzing and discussing the various Central Idea’s created within the class, made further changes and edits to their CI’s if necessary and then voted on their top picks from their class to enter into the vote for the final Central Idea survey. There was a tie in 5T, so there are 4 final Central Ideas that are going to be voted on tomorrow to determine what the Central Idea of the Prairie Waters PYP Exhibition (#pwex17) will be this year! Stay tuned to find out what our Central Idea is for the 8 weeks of Exhibition!
