May 25th 2019`

Dear Families,

We have had such an exciting time waiting for our chicks to hatch!! The first one finally arrived just as the students were leaving on Thursday afternoon! The afternoon class was able to see 14 chicks on Friday and some of the morning students came by to see them on Friday after class. We can’t wait to see them all on Monday… there are now 16 chicks!

Students have been working on trying to hear and write letter sounds they hear in words, writing them down in their journals. This is the first step in “kid writing” where students listen for and attempt to write letters to form words. In this process it is important that no words the students write are considered wrong.  This is because at this stage, correctly spelling words is not as important as trying to spell words!  We want the students to feel confident and encouraged in their attempts, as opposed to feeling like they have to be correct.

For numeracy we continue working on dice games in pairs. The aim of these games is to build students’ fluency and efficiency in subitizing numbers –  to instantly recognize arrangements that represent numbers. This is an important foundational skill in mathematical thinking.
A new centre this week was playing with dirt in the sensory bin! The students are building gardens and finding other creatures that “live” in the soil!

We started taking students out for recess with the big kids this week and will continue this till the end of Kindergarten.  We will not be going out every day, but please have your child dressed for the weather, as they might go out that day!
– After several times, the Educational Assistants will go with the students as they become more familiar and comfortable with recess with the rest of the school.

School wide Celebration of Learning May 29, 4-7pm
Please join us for an evening for your children to
– show what they have been learning

May 17 2019

Dear Families,

We have had a very busy week. It has been fascinating investigating our eggs in the incubator! Students have learned about how the baby chick is developing inside the egg, what it eats and how it looks at different stages. We watched a short video of what the development would be and we candelled the eggs and could actually see the developing embryo. The last day of candelling was on Thursday (we need to leave the eggs alone for the last stage before they hatch next week!) and the chick is now quite big inside the egg, taking up almost half the space.  We could see the veins and that the chick was moving inside!!
Students have been drawing guided journal entries of the development and labelling their pictures. They also drew a chicken life cycle!
During centre time the students were creating nests for eggs to keep eggs safe and cosy so they can also “develop”! 😉
This week, Alien In-line skating continued. All the students did an amazing job of learning to skate and I am so proud of them all!! For our last day of skating the kids got to play games and skate to the disco lights!!
For numeracy we have been working on dice games in pairs. The students were graphing their dice throws and playing games. The aim of these games is to build students’ ability to subitize numbers – which means to instantly recognize arrangements that represent numbers. This is an important foundational skill in mathematical thinking.
Students have been learning to use and play with the Osmo in class.  We are starting with tangrams, learning and practising spatial reasoning, another foundational thinking skill in mathematics.  Please see the pictures on Twitter for now.

We will start taking students out for RECESS with the big kids starting next week, in order to prepare the students for Grade One.  We will not be going out every day, but please have your child dressed for the weather, as they might go out that day!
– Initially, Teachers and Educational Assistants will go out with the students each time, teaching them how to ask for help and negotiate how to play when there are lots of other kids outside.
– After several times, the Educational Assistants will go with the students as they become more familiar and comfortable with recess with the rest of the school.

Reminders for this week:
1. Library is on WEDNESDAY, please help your child bring their book!
2. Save the dates:
– School wide Celebration of Learning May 29, 4-7pm
– We will be showcasing student learning and projects
–  We are also sharing and showing off teacher learning this year! Come and see what we have been up to!
– Kindergarten Field trip to Calgary Corn Maze, June 12, 8-2:30pm
–
We will send out forms in June and thank you to all parents who volunteered for the trip – more on volunteers later!

Please see my Twitter for pictures from our week!

Wishing everyone a wonderful long weekend!!

May 10th

Dear Families,

First of all …

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY  to all the Moms, Grandma’s, Aunts and Care Givers!  Thank you all for the amazing job you do!

PS….. please check your child’s Home School Bag for a little gift from them. 🙂

We have had such an exciting week with the eggs that are now 7 days old. The students have had a chance to guess what they thought was in the eggs and came up with many fun and creative ideas – armadillo, snake, bat, chick, duck, dinosaur.  We candled the eggs (shine a bright light up inside the egg) and observed that there was a dark blob inside with a darker spot and some veins. This is the chick developing inside and the eye is visible! The students followed a guided drawing of what is inside the egg and labelled the chick and the veins.

We spent some time drawing flowers and painting them… Mothers enjoy!!

The students were introduced to our Osmo! Osmo works with our ipads to create educational activities. We started working on tanagrams using triangles and one romboid to follow instructions and make pictures.

The students had their first lessons in skating this week. All the students did such an amazing job of trying and keep trying and everyone managed to get up and skating!  The afternoon class had their second lesson and played some games including limbo and “Not in my back yard”!

I am working on getting pictures up… thank you for your patience!  Please check Twitter for some pictures from the week.

AND today is Walkie, Wheelie Wednesday!! As the weather improves, we encourage everyone to walk to wheel to school on a bike, scooter, or other!!  This helps the environment, helps our fitness and gives us fresh air which makes us ready to learn at school!
please remember that once on school property, bikes, scooter and skateboards should be walked to avoid accidents… it’s a school rule! 🙂

March 29th

Dear Families,

It has been a busy week in Kindergarten!  We said goodbye to Ms. Weyman on Wednesday, although she is hoping to come by and visit us later in the spring.  Our new student teacher, Ms. Holmes started last week and has been teaching this week.  The students are getting to know her and I know she is working to get to know them.
This week we started working on lower case letters! We will practise them all so everyone knows the correct formations and later students will use the lower case letters to print their names.  The students also worked on several journal entries for Work on Writing. Everyone is now able to print letters and numbers, so pretend writing (wiggly lines) are no longer allowed.  All the students did a great job of doing careful pictures with lots of details, good colouring and then adding letters, numbers and copied words to their journals.

Our week was all about Community this week! We talked about and brainstormed what we knew about community. We learned that community means groups of people (in our case) who live and work together. We did some journal entries about this and then drew a picture of one part of our community.  The pictures are on the bulletin boards showing a community with streets.  And then on Wednesday we had parents who are community workers and helpers come and visit our class!
The morning had a police officer, a nurse from the children’s hospital, a gym owner and a garage door technician. The afternoon class had a nurse from the children’s hospital, a pizza maker and a nurse from the operating room at the hospital.  The students were so excited to hear from these parents and they had lots of questions and stories to tell.  Thank you so very much to all the parents who volunteered their time and expertise to share with the kids!!
In class the students have now added pictures of the presenters to our community display on the wall!  Wonderful pictures with great details and some kids added labels.
Please see our pictures here and on twitter!

Thank you so much to all parents who have contributed to our SPRING FLING raffle baskets!  We are still collecting for “Summer Fun” and “Spa and Bath”.

Reminders for this week:

1. Please, please, please send in your Home Reading books INSIDE the Home Reading Folders to protect our reading books.  We will exchange books on WEDNESDAYs starting this week.
2. REPORT CARDS are in the Home School Bags today!  Please have a look! The report card is your copy, please return the envelopes to help us recycle!
3. Kindergarten SPRING CONCERT will be on Thursday April 11th at 6:30pm. Students must be at school by 6pm wearing their “spring best”!  Parents, families, siblings are all welcome!
4. On Tuesday next week, a Field Trip form will be coming home for our field trip to the Zoo on Wednesday, April 17. This will be a full day field trip for both AM and PM classes. More details will follow. Please return the forms by April 11th.
– If your child has a zoo pass, bus fees must still be paid, as per the form
– Zoo passes must be handed in to the teacher by Monday April 15th.
5. The Spring Fling Dance is on Thursday April 4th at 5:30pm – all families are invited to this fun event!

I wish everyone a wonderful weekend and all the students many hours of playing outside in this lovely weather!!
