Book Club Update – I am now reading my next set of assigned chapters and am creating new questions for discussion. Click HERE to access the Google Doc. DO NOT READ AHEAD! On Monday, I need to have my 3 THICK questions ready for discussion.

Today we watched the Gillette commercial which has caused some interesting debate and discussion. Click HERE to watch it. What were some of the interesting ideas that came out of our discussion? How does it connect to our CENTRAL IDEA? (People have an ethical responsibility for what they consume and create)

Bring back library books on Monday.

Bring headphones for Fine Arts if I don’t have any at school yet.

Some of us have not handed in our advertisement sheets that were due today. Make sure they come back tomorrow.

Book Club Update – Today was a discussion day. I can now begin reading my next set of assigned chapters and start creating new questions for discussion. Click HERE to access the Google Doc. DO NOT READ AHEAD!

Today we discussed where we saw ads. They include:

  • On TV
  • On YouTube
  • On a magnet on my fridge
  • On Netflix
  • On a video game
  • Around the soccer field
  • On my phone while I was playing a video game
  • On my neighbour’s trailer
  • Billboards
  • Items of clothing
  • On the radio
  • On a flyer
  • Cineplex – inside and outside the theatre
  • On the back of a Mac computer (Apple logo)
  • On an iPhone
  • On CNN
  • At the rec centre – at the hockey arena
  • At the mall – brand names everywhere
  • App Store
  • Newspaper
  • Benches
  • Social Media – Snap Chat, Instagram, Facebooks, Twitter
  • Online shopping
  • Blogs
  • Pic Collage
  • Sales people that go around your neighbourhood
  • At school
  • On the side or outside a business

Some other ideas that we explored:

There are ads everywhere and we don’t even realize it.

Because we are so saturated with ads, perhaps companies can take ads down.

Big companies usually advertise when something new is being released.

Companies advertise when there is a deal.

My apologies, yesterday’s blog was not published. It is posted below.

Yesterday, some of us had a difficult time showing respect and listening to the both the guest teacher who was with us for part of the day and the lunchroom supervisor. Tonight, I need to review with my parents how I need to act during times when Ms. Csak isn’t in the class with us.

Book Club update – today was a re-read day and I created some more questions for tomorrow’s discussion. Tonight, I need to make sure that I create at least 2 more questions for discussion. Click HERE to access the Google Doc. DO NOT READ AHEAD!

Some of us are continuing the “Project 333” Challenge. Check the blog and our Twitter account (@grade5Csak) for updates of our wardrobes.

Continue documenting places where I see ads in my life. Fill out the table and keep the sheet in a safe place. It is due tomorrow.

Today was a Book Club discussion day. Today, we met in our groups and used our questions to guide our discussion about our week 1 chapters. During the next couple of days (both at home and school), we will re-read our first set of chapters and create at least 2 more thick questions based upon the chapters and our discussions. Our next discussion will be on Wednesday. Click HERE to access the Google Doc.

Some of us started the “Project 333” Challenge. Check the blog and our Twitter account (@grade5Csak) for updates of our wardrobes.

Show my parents the sheet I brought home to document places that I see ads in my life. Read the instructions carefully and fill out the table. Keep the sheet in a safe place. It is due on Wednesday when we analyze our observations.

Project 333 Challenge

Posted by: | January 10, 2019 | 1 Comment |

Hi everyone,

Students have been working hard “tuning in” to our new unit of inquiry. Our central idea is: People have an ethical responsibility for what they consume and create. We have had some amazing conversations about how much “stuff” we have. Does this “stuff” make us truly happy? What influences or entices us to have so many possessions? One of the movements we have discovered is Project 333. It is a movement created to minimize the amount of “stuff” we wear and have in our closets (often being passed over and never worn).

Here is link to the Project 333 website: https://bemorewithless.com/project-333/

Some students in 5C have challenged their peers and teachers to try this challenge. Here’s how it works: Go through your closet and choose 33 items that you will wear for 3 months. In our case, we will do this until the end of our unit of inquiry – the end of February. If you want to continue for the entire 3 months, go for it! Below are some guidelines:

What: 33 items including clothing, accessories, jewelry, outerwear and shoes.

The total number of possibilities = 21,176!!!

What not: these items are not counted as part of the 33 items – underwear, sleep wear, in-home lounge wear, and workout clothing (but your workout clothes have to workout).

The link provided above provides some useful tips of what to include.

This project is entirely optional. Mrs. Friske, Mrs. Crawford and I are both going to participate in this project and we hope many students in 5C, 5T and 5M will join in too.

This weekend, go through your closet and start selecting the 33 pieces of clothing that you will be wearing. Take a picture of these clothes and upload it to MyBlueprint because we want to document our journey. Make sure that your other clothes are out of sight (out of mind)!! Maybe put them into plastic bags or containers, so that you’re not tempted to wear them.

We’re excited to see what comes of Project 333, as well as the conversations and reflection that come from it.

Thanks so much!!

Ms. Csak
