Numeracy Online

Resources for teaching math online

This page is designed to support  Rocky View teachers to  navigate math and numeracy  online whether you are an online teacher or you and your students are in 2 week isolation and learning from home. We will be updating this page regularly with ideas, tools and activities to help teachers design intentional learning experiences focusing on fluency, reasoning and problem solving virtually.

Please contact Jason Ness or Stacy Connolly with any questions you may have or specific resources or tools you may need. We are here to help!

Online Resources by Grade

Online Resources by Grade

These grade level documents have been created and curated by RVS Online Leads, teachers and Numeracy Specialists in line with the RVS Suggested Math Scope and Sequence and the big ideas of the program of studies to help teachers design intentional, purposeful and engaging numeracy learning experiences for their students. They contain many links to ready to go resources, templates, videos and games that teachers can use and embed no matter what online platform they are using. These are working documents and will added to throughout the school year so please do not make a copy and check back regularly.

Can find your grade? We are working hard to have Grade 5-9 online resource documents ready in the coming weeks. Please bare with us and we hope to have these available soon. If you are need of something immediately, please contact Jason Ness or Stacy Connolly with any questions you may have or specific resources or tools you may need.

Key Outcomes and Scope & Sequence

Prioritized Key Outcomes

The RVS Numeracy Team has identified key outcomes by grade that reflect important ideas that teachers may choose to focus on during online learning. While all outcomes are important, the identified outcomes are essential understandings that will set students up for success in the next grade level. The highlighted outcomes in the document may help teachers prioritize the key numeracy outcomes as they plan for math online learning for their students.  Teachers should also take into consideration their class profile, their students and their individualized needs and curricular content already covered.

RVS Suggested Math Scope & Sequence Grade 1-9

The RVS Suggested Math Year Scope & Sequence documents were created by the RVS Numeracy Specialists and reviewed by RVS Grade Level Teachers.  These documents aim to guide teachers to develop their year plans with the math big ideas of the Alberta Program of Studies in mind to support math teachers to design high quality and impactful learning experiences for their students. These general timelines suggest what outcomes should be taught in which order in each grade and ‘key outcomes’ have been prioritized and are often recurring throughout the year. These suggested timelines are not meant to be rigid and should be adapted based on student and class needs. The documents also do not account for interdisciplinary designs for math transfer learning through project-based learning.

Assessment

Assessment is tricky at the best of times and even more difficult when our students are learning at home. The majority of our time should be spent providing timely, actionable feedback (formative assessment) to support student learning. Here are some resources and professional learning sessions to help you navigate math assessment during the Covd-19 pandemic.

Mathletics

Mathletics

The Numeracy Branch of the Learning Department has arranged to have Mathletics licences available for any Rocky View K-10 teachers who would like to use this tool with their students while schools are closed, until our existing licences expire in October 2020. Mathletics is the online digital platform for math that is being recommended by the Learning Department as we develop a learning continuity plan for RVS schools.

While a digital tool such as Mathletics does not replace designing intentional learning experiences and should not be the only math learning opportunity teachers will provide, it will allow teachers to provide students with opportunities to build fluency using a RVS approved tool in the absence of face-to-face learning experiences. Mathletics is aligned to the Alberta Program of Studies, and provides quality  activities that are designed to build conceptual understanding using multiple representations, and also provides opportunities to engage students in reasoning and problem solving. For more information or to set up your class contact the numeracy team.

Mathlateics have provided some PL for RVS teachers. Here are links to recordings of the Getting Started with Mathletics sessions.  Mathletics Gr K- 5 and Mathletics Gr 6-10

Open and Parallel Tasks in Inclusive Math Classrooms K-9

How do we create inclusive math classrooms which create opportunities for all students to deepen their understanding of the big ideas in math at an accessible level? How do we use pre-assessment data to meet students where they are and to move learning forward?  This session will share examples of designing for all students using open and parallel tasks for students in K-9 classrooms.
