April Update

It has been a little while since I wrote an update about what we are currently doing in class. If you have any questions, please send me an email or comment below and I’ll get back to you!

~ In Literacy, we just wrapped up our fifth round of CRM and will begin the last round when we return from Spring Break. As a class, we finished reading “The Mouse & the Motocycle” as well as “Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great”, and have just recently begun reading “The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe”. In the last few months of school, we will be focusing more on writing, creating sentences, and using our imaginations to write stories. This is the focus for the last round of CRM. You can support your child at home by practicing writing, printing, sounding out words, etc.

~ In math, we are continuing to explore Adding and Subtracting. We have talked about regrouping when adding numbers using place value and base 10 blocks. The kids LOVED the games like Plankton and Place Value Pyramids. Have them teach you those games and maybe you will end up learning something new! Students are also practicing basic facts using mental math. Please practice these at home in order to add and subtract numbers quickly in their head. By using flash cards or any other games that will promote quick memory of math facts, will help them in the long run.

~ In inquiry, we are looking at a few different things. For science, we are exploring liquids including the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation & collection), states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and will be looking at boats & buoyancy next week in our in-school field trip (forms and money due FRIDAY!). For social, we are looking deeper into communities and how they are organized. Recently, we had town planners from Chestermere visit our class and through hands-on activities, plotted out our own version of Chestermere. We talked more about what is essential for a community to thrive and now students are creating their OWN communities! They will be recording their explanations about their community in the next few days on Show Me so check their blogs next week to see what they created!
