Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta makes children’s dreams come true! This organization grants wishes to sick kids in Southern Alberta every day. They send kids to Disneyland; or to meet their favourite sports star or to see family far away, or even just give them a much-wished-for toy.
We were so excited to have April Coté come to our classroom in November to help us learn about her passion to help kids who are sick and to share what Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta does in the community and around the world.
Make-A-wish asks kids three questions in order to be able to grant them a wish. Do you have a critical illness? Are you between the ages of three and seventeen? Have you had a wish granted before?
We wondered what kinds of wishes are granted. April explained there are five different kinds of wishes!
- Wish to be…a firefighter or a police officer
- Wish to meet…John Cena or Justin Beiber
- Wish to go to…like going to Japan or the Philippines
- Wish to have…a backyard playground or
- Wish to give back…giving special glasses to people who are colour blind
We were treated to the video below about Brooklyn whose wish was granted in 2018.
When it was asked if kids could help with Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta, the answer was, “Yes!”
We went on a trip to Cross Iron Mills Mall to help with their gift wrapping efforts over the Christmas season last December. We sang Christmas carols and wrapped gifts for shoppers. This helped Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta fundraise so they can grant more wishes.
Lucas, Rylan, Alexis and Christina in our class also sold popcorn during our Exhibition and raised $130 to donate to Make-A-Wish® Southern Alberta.
Thank you to April for the time you took to answer every question and engage all the kids. It was a great day!
